people who self diagnose themselves with mental illnesses and then refuse to go to an actual person who can diagnose them and refuse to seek help are actually the worst

ok bye

sorry but all i’m getting from this is “people who are poor, uninsured, discriminated against by the medical profession, or abused are actually the worst”

so yeah, bye

I’m sorry but in this day and age there is no excuse for not being able to see a medical professional. You can literally always find a hospital that will take you in free of charge; as a matter of fact I work at two, right here in my city.

And “discriminated against by the medical profession”? What the heck is that supposed to mean? “Oh, you’re black, sorry sir we can’t treat you here”? That’s utter nonsense.

That’s not what that means honey. That means that there are some doctors out there, depending on what mental illness you could possibly have, who only see two options. They either want to pump you full of drugs or they think that you’re faking it. Plus not every hospital has mental health staff on site, because not every hospital has a mental health ward. They have to call in people from other places. Plus money CAN still be an issue. You would have cried at the bill for the THREE therapists visits I had.

Well…I mean I’m sure you’re right but all I have to go on is personal experience.  At the psychiatric clinic where I work, the doctors are often the ones suggesting that medication dosages be lowered or removed altogether, and the patients’ parents are the ones protesting. (I work in pediatric psychiatry). I’m sure there are some rotten doctors, but on the whole they really truly do just want to help you and they want the best for you!

I agree though that there are probably plenty of hospitals that are understaffed or have no mental health professionals at all, but hey, that’s what social workers are for! They basically have just as good a working knowledge of the DSM-V as any doctor, to be perfectly honest.

I do agree that money is often an object, but I think (hope!) that that sort of thing is changing rapidly…
